Gopi Birla Memorial School was established in 1953 by Shrimati Gopi Birla, for promoting the education of girls, in a picturesque South Mumbai location. In 1970 the School became affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education. In 1977, it became one of the few CBSE schools having Permanent Affiliation upto grade X. In 2014, it received affiliation for the Senior School Section for Science, Commerce & Humanities streams. The school has been granted the status of a Linguistic Minority institution run by Birla Industries Group Charitable Trust.

Under the aegis of Yash Birla Group Management GBMS currently caters to the K-12 segment with an approximate strength of 1500 students. The school has created a niche for itself as an culturally and academically strong educational institution where the emphasis is on the all round development of the child’ personality
